Lunchtime walks have many benefits, provided it’s safe. In July 2022, several employees at OFS Optics in Franklin Township contacted RideWise to express their concerns about the safety of walking during lunch breaks, citing heavy traffic and a lack of sidewalks. The employees of OFS Optics are commended for taking the initiative to make the area around their worksite a safer, more accessible place to walk.
OFS Optics is located on School House Road, a busy thoroughfare with many businesses and manufacturing sites. RideWise showed the employees how to conduct a walkability assessment, along with representatives from the police, the town council, and residents, to identify barriers to walking and possible improvements.
Armed with clipboards, pencils and cameras, walk audit participants and officers from the Franklin Police Department walked the length of School House Road and made note of safety hazards. The group concluded that heavy tractor trailer/vehicle traffic and missing sidewalks made most of School House Road unsuitable for walking. They encouraged Franklin Township to add sidewalks, lighting and bike lanes along the road.
