Idling occurs when a vehicle is turned on and is not moving, and is a detriment to those who are young, old, and otherwise in an adverse health situation, as it releases particulates that cause sever health issues, and subsequently, damage to the environment.
NJ’s legal limit for idling a vehicle is up to three minutes – after that, you are at risk for fines and tickets.
Two Truths and a Lie about Idling:
Truth: Idling is not cost-effective.
Reasoning: 10 seconds of idling wastes more fuel than restarting your vehicle. Idling can actually decrease the life of your engine components.
Truth: It doesn’t take a long time for the engine to warm up in cold weather.
Reasoning: 30 seconds after starting your car, your engine is hot. Even in cold weather, engines warm up faster when moving than sitting still.
Lie: You can’t find more information regarding anti-idling programs and information at RideWise…because you can!
