Raritan Borough is the sixth most populous municipality in Somerset County, and has a walkable downtown. There is an NJ Transit rail station located within Raritan, and the borough is serviced by Somerset County’s CAT-2R and CAT-3R buses. Raritan adopted a Complete Streets policy in 2013, and several Raritan schools participate in RideWise’s Safe Routes to School programming.
To promote pedestrian safety in Raritan, RideWise partnered with the Borough of Raritan and the Raritan Police Department to conduct a Street Smart campaign in July 2018. The campaign resulted in increased awareness of the Street Smart messages and an improvement in most pedestrian and driver behaviors. The pre and post campaign observations showed a 69 percent decrease in the number of turning drivers who did not stop for pedestrians at Somerset Street and Loomis Street, and a 27 percent increase in the number of pedestrians who used the crosswalk at Somerset Street and Anderson Street.
