Knowing who to ask about bike safety is essential, talk with bike experts such as those from your local bike shop. Be aware of the rules of the road, practice defensive driving, and always be visible. Make sure your bike is equipped with front white lights and red lights.

New Jersey E-Bike Laws and Requirements
Licensing- Must be 15 years old. Obtain a license at NJMVC Licensing Center.
Registration and Insurance – You must obtain e-bike insurance and provide valid proof of ownership of the e-bike.
What are the biggest safety concerns for e-bike riders?
The biggest safety concerns include speed and control, cognitive and judgement gaps. traffic and situational awareness, incorrect bike gear, distracted driving, and avoidance of complying with the speed limit.
What should e-bike riders be aware of when riding?
- Be aware of incoming traffic.
- Following the rules of the road.
- Maintaining their e-bikes properly.
- The importance of wearing a helmet.
- Driving at a safe and controllable speed and creating a safe distance between themselves and other drivers.
Know before you go: E-Bike and Bike Checklist
Helmet: Always wear your helmet. Ensure that it fits properly. Follow the 2V1 Rule where it should sit level and cover your forehead with two fingers above your eyebrows.
Brakes: Be sure to use both rear and front brakes to stop safely.
Battery: Avoid leaving the charger plugged in overnight and use quality batteries such as Bosch PowerTube, Gouach Infinite E-Battery, PowerPack or LunaCycle for reliability, water and fire resistance, and durability.
Throttle: Be mindful of how you use the throttle, use your thumb or twist the handle to control the speed. Pushing or twisting the throttle more will increase the power.
Rider Awareness: Be aware of the rules of the road.
You must practice defensive riding and always be visible by wearing reflective clothing.
