NJ TRANSIT PERMITS E-BICYCLES FOR CUSTOMERS

Access Is Allowed on Select Trains, Buses and Light Rail Under Existing Policy for Bicycles

NEWARK, NJ – NJ TRANSIT has updated its policy on personal vehicles to now allow e-bikes, e-scooters and hoverboards under the existing bicycle regulations which detail when and where such vehicles can be on board.

“Today’s NJ TRANSIT looks beyond the conventional parameters of the customer experience by encouraging our riders to choose healthy, eco-friendly mobility options to access public transit,” said NJ TRANSIT Senior Vice President, Communications & Customer Experience Anthony Grieco. “Expanding our current policy to include e-bikes and e-scooters aligns with Governor Murphy’s Energy Master Plan and continues our work along multiple parallel tracks to make our transit system and our state as environmentally friendly as possible.”

“By its very nature transportation never stops moving and evolving,” said NJ TRANSIT Senior Vice President & Chief Safety Officer Brian Lapp, “This policy change demonstrates NJ TRANSIT’s continued dedication to improving the customer experience by staying at the forefront of new and growing trends with safe and environmentally friendly mobility options, and finding ways to safely incorporate them into our system.”

NJ TRANSIT supports and encourages the use of personal vehicles by providing accommodations for its customers. There is no extra charge for bringing personal vehicles aboard NJ TRANSIT vehicles and permits are not required.

Collapsible personal vehicles, such as e-bikes, e-scooters and hoverboards, are now permitted on all NJ TRANSIT vehicles at all times.

Rail

The use of non-collapsible e-bikes, e-scooters and hoverboards can be used in similar fashion to standard-frame bicycles on select trains. For a complete list of which trains standard-frame bicycles can be accessed, look for the bicycle icon at the top of the printed timetable schedule.

Bus

Non-collapsible e-bikes, e-scooters and hoverboards are permitted at all times on buses using bicycle racks on the front or with underfloor luggage compartments on a first-come, first-served basis. If space is not available, customers with personal vehicles must wait for the next available bus. The bus operator may limit personal vehicles when vehicles are crowded or when they believe it creates an unsafe situation.

Light Rail

Non-collapsible e-bikes, e-scooters and hoverboards can be carried on board Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and Newark Light Rail vehicles from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays, and all day on Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays.

Both collapsible and non-collapsible personal vehicles are permitted on all River LINE light rail vehicles at all times.

NJ TRANSIT policy does not apply to connecting services. Customers should be familiar with the personal vehicle policies of connecting services prior to traveling.

Motorized wheelchairs and other devices required for accessibility are always permitted on NJ TRANSIT vehicles and in facilities.

For passengers’ safety, riding or charging personal vehicles inside NJ TRANSIT facilities or on board NJ TRANSIT vehicles is strictly prohibited. Gasoline-powered personal vehicles, such as mopeds, are also prohibited on NJ TRANSIT vehicles.
