This month, Beth became the 50th client to receive a bicycle through RideWise’s BikeConnect program!Started in July 2021, BikeConnect is a partnership between RideWise and Pop’s Bike Shop in Somerville, with RideWise soliciting bicycle donations and paying for the repairs made by Pop’s. The repaired bicycles are given to adults who need reliable transportation for employment. Partial funding for the program is also provided by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), one of RideWise’s funding partners.
Any adult who receives services from a Somerset County nonprofit or human services agency is eligible for a bike. Referring nonprofit agencies to date include Visions and Pathways, Home of Somerset County, WorkFirst New Jersey, Somerset County Board of Social Services and United Way of Northern New Jersey.
For individuals who do not have a car or access to public transit, a bicycle can make all the difference for a resident who is trying to get to work. As one case manager told RideWise, “Hearing that this (a refurbished bicycle) was a possibility changed his whole perspective on “making it” here. Thank you!”
RideWise relies on bicycle donations from the community to ensure the longevity of the program. Arrangements for bicycle donations can be made by contacting email@example.com. Nonprofit organizations can refer individuals in need of a bicycle to RideWise by completing an application online at ridewise.org/bikeconnect.
