Before starting a Safe Routes to School program, it’s critical to understand how safe and inviting areas around schools are to encourage walking and biking. RideWise will lead walkability and bikeability audits but does require participation from parents, the school, and when possible, members of the municipality (eg. police, DPW, etc). Audits are a great project for student groups, the PTA or community advocates.
A bike audit is a great tool to identify barriers that may make it difficult for people of all ages and abilities to bike. A bike audit is a great way to not only identify observations about physical conditions and feelings of comfort and safety, but also provide a different mindset and view of bicycling for participants who don’t or infrequently ride.
