Warmer weather means more pedestrians. To promote safe travel behavior for both drivers and pedestrians, RideWise is partnering with Manville Borough and Raritan Borough to conduct springtime Street Smart campaigns. Street Smart was developed by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) in response to New Jersey’s designation as a “focus” state for pedestrian safety. New Jersey ranks sixth in the U.S. for pedestrian fatalities. Street Smart campaigns are a collaborative effort led by RideWise with assistance from law enforcement, the municipality and the business community. Street Smart emphasizes five messages for motorists and pedestrians:
- Obey Speed Limits
- Stop for Pedestrians
- Wait for the Walk
- Use Crosswalks
- Heads Up, Phones Down
Communities that are interested in conducting a Street Smart campaign are encouraged to contact RideWise at (908) 704-1011 or e-mail staff@ridewise.org.
