In October 2023, RideWise Inc. partnered with the Bound Brook Police Department and Building Bridges to Better Health to conduct a Street Smart NJ pedestrian safety campaign, the first campaign to be conducted within Bound Brook. The education and enforcement elements of the campaign lasted from October 1 to October 31 with pre- and post-campaign activities occurring in September and November. There were three target locations for conducting observational analyses: East Main Street and Mountain Avenue; East Main Street and Hamilton Avenue; and the traffic circle on East Main Street. RideWise partnered with several community organizations in Bound Brook to spread the survey: HOPE Church, the Bound Brook branch of the Somerset County Library, Middle Earth, and the Bound Brook Revitalization Partnership.
Pedestrian behavior improved after the campaign; overall, the majority of pedestrians obeyed traffic laws before and after the campaign, with this number generally increasing after the campaign. Driver behavior improved at target location 3 after the campaign, with the number of drivers stopping for pedestrians increasing by 22%. However, driver behavior did not improve at the other two target locations. The surveys reflect a concern among residents with speeding and drivers not stopping for pedestrians.
